Ferdinand Evaldsson
BIO
A painter and visual artist, he graduated in icon painting from Konstfack University of Arts in Stockholm. He uses wood, metal, pigment, and gelatin, mainly to create wooden relief sculptures. Deeply rooted in the tradition of icon painting, his works stand out with their deep symbolism, drawing from personal and collective memories. His color palette alludes to the tones often found in icon painting. His materials become a tool for discovering and reinterpreting memory, and serve to reflect upon the processes of recollection and forgetting. Evaldsson’s handcrafts are more than a way to bring passing moments to life; they are also a conscious path to quiet introspection.

This diptych of reliefs depicts two complementary scenes that explore different aspects of myths. The first is a lively underwater scene, filled with frolicking sea creatures, and the story of the sister mermaids of Warsaw and Copenhagen. The composition prompts the viewer to hunt for hidden details that relate to various versions of the legend, creating a space for individual interpretation. The second relief shows three repeating fragments of clothing, floating or resting on the water, seemingly tossed by the current. This vision draws on the motif of the bather, found in many myths, where clothes left on the shore play a key role in the narrative. Both works, placed in a stylized rhomboid mandorla, play with mysteries and encourage reflection on their mythological motifs.
