Mikołaj Moskal
BIO
A visual artist who creates drawings and installations, he studied printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Frankfurt/Offenbach am Main. He mainly paints with tempera on paper, focusing on collecting information and inspiration to build contemplative, harmonious worlds. He pays special attention to the properties of the materials he uses and to sensory and emotional experiences. Although his synthetic figures and shapes reflect reality, they are ideograms of emotions, remaining abstract creatures on the verge of the imagination, suspended in a historical void beyond culture.
Artwork
The Chalices series, gouache and collage on paper, 2024
These works have two-color compositions with central layouts, and highly symmetrical forms. They are made of paper cut out by hand with scissors and painted in gouache using mineral paints. The works were inspired by the classicist surroundings of the PURO Warsaw Old Town Hotel, from which the artist took details of the architectural decor, such as amphoras and chalices. He transformed them into new silhouettes, as abstract extrapolations of the classicist motifs. The works in the Chalices series are synthetic in form, reduced to simple contours. The chalice outlines contrast with the backgrounds, giving the compositions a spatial aspect. The final effect is thought-provoking—it is hard to say if the chalice depicted is a real object or merely a shadow or reflection of an architectural detail.
