Szymon Rogiński

Szymon Rogiński is a photographer, an acting graduate of the School on Wheels of the Derevo Theatre (Germany, Holland) and Art Photography Studies in Gdańsk. He worked at the Photography Department of the National Museum in Gdańsk and the Gazeta Wyborcza photography studio. His photographs have appeared in numerous publications, such as Vogue l’Hommes, Vogue Italy, K MAG, Futu, and Fluid. He has made numerous photography projects, including: USA, Poland Synthesis, Clarity, Tokyo Sleepless, UFO, German Dogs (with Katarzyna Korzeniecka), Borderlands, and The Internets. His photographs have also been used in books, including: Zdążyć przed zachodem słońca, Małopolska. Fotografie. To niczego nie wyjaśnia, Papercraft 2, Zeitgenössische Künstler aus Polen, Positionen Series, Sense of Place: European Landscape Photography, High Touch: Tactile Design and Visual Explorations, and Postcards from Otwock. In 2019 the National Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning released his photobook, Internety/The Internets. His works are found in many museum collections, such as MuFO in Krakow, the Contemporary Museum in Wrocław, and the National Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning in Warsaw.

The artist took these documentary photographs in 2013 for the Tri-City Mosaics project, run by the Architecture Foundation, Karolina Andrzejewska, and Katarzyna Juchniewicz. The photos depict a fragment of a famous mosaic by Juliusz Studnicki from the 1950s, found at the Gdynia Central Station. The mosaic was discovered by art conservators during the renovation of the building in 2011. The monumental Social Realist work maintains a warm color scheme and depicts seascapes with views of boats, machines in the shipyard, and soaring birds. In his photography practice, Szymon Rogiński enjoys capturing the transformations of the Polish landscape. He is interested in the remnants of old architecture and infrastructure, often creating sinister and disquieting landscapes in his pictures.
